s1 Research Stream One The first of four research threads is a five-year longitudinal study of workers affected by the automotive assembly plant closures across Australia. Participants in our longitudinal workers survey had jobs which were earmarked for retrenchment leading up to the closure of assembly plants operated in Australia by General Motors Holden, Toyota Motor Company, and Ford. Participant contact information was passed on to the research team at the University of South Australia by the government partners of the project. Participants had provided consent for their details to be used for further communication as part of their engagement in retraining and transition services. The study investigates the efficacy of private and public investments in pre-retrenchment counselling and training, by collecting data to help understand: Which factors affect decisions to exit or stay in the labour market Which factors improve the chances of employment Which factors shorten the spell of unemployment The intermittency of work careers and labour ‘branching’ processes Our findings are published in journal articles and can be accessed on our Findings & Publications page. Research Streams Stream One Five-year longitudinal study of workers affected by the automotive closures across Australia. Stream Two A series of qualitative interviews designed to add depth to our understanding of the Stream One longitudinal workers survey. Stream Three Discrete Choice Experiments investigating labour market and retraining preferences. Stream Four Community survey of affected regions.
